Genre - Mindmap

This mindmap represents all different types of genres, the stars ( which have been staring in our film), locations ( where we have been filming ). This plan helped us a lot in choosing the equipment, writing the script and thinking about which actors will be filmed and where.

Treatment - P1(a)

Something like this

Now I would want to talk about the following points:
  • Format
  • Running time
  • Genre
  • The title
  • Target audience
  • Plot

Format.

The format of this video is 1080p HDV. This tell us that the video has high quality.

Running time

The time of this video is 3:19.

Genre.

Me and my group have been carefully thinking about the genre of the film which we are going to do in the future and we decided, that the best option for us is crime. This decision was hard, because it is difficult to film crime scenes in school because of the school's atmosphere, but in overall, it came out really nicely.

The title.

The actual name for the film came out spontaneously. There were 3 or 4 names originally like: " The Big Job" and "High risk". But after we have filmed the 2nd scene, we came out with the actual name of our film, which is "Something like this". We thing that this name gives a feel of what we have tried to show in the film.

Target audience.

As out film is about the crime and it represents some bad habits like drinking, smoking and stealing someones property. Therefore, we have thought that the optimal age group for this film would be the people in the age group of 12 +.

Plot

Our film is about the juvenile delinquent which have been sent from USSR because of their criminal past. Now they need to continue their education in international school. Ironically they all met in their school...
This idea came to our mind not straight away. We thought about the difficult times in Russia after The Second World War. So we tried to combine our lives with those hard times and we came out with this project. We have wrote our plot in Google Drive document which allows my group to access the plot at all the time, have the same file and be able to add/delete something in our work if there is a need for it. Story board - P1(c)

The 1st shot, where there are 3 peaces of papers which lie on the table, have been decided to be replaced with the introduction to the film. This decision have been made when we have started to edit the first shoots and the realised that the film will take more than 3:30 min ( 3:30 is a maximum time allowed ). The scenes  2 - 6  stayed and it will be accompanied by subtitles, because in some scenes actors speak russian, therefore we have edit subtitles so the viewer will understand what are they talking about.

The 12th scene have been taken away, because our film was too long and this shot is not as important as others, therefore we have taken it away. This decision gave us to make longer shots and add more detail to our story. During 11th scene, the film is speeded up, because this shot is really important but it came out too long ( 45 sec ) and after speeding it became ( 20 sec ).

Set designs - P1(d)

This pictures represent the shots which we have done:

Morning, the phone is on the table and after 3 seconds of waiting the phone starts to ring. The call is from the guardian which wants to tell him that there is a new girl in his school which has a criminal past as well.

The action is happening in Ilya's room. There is a bed where the actor is going to sleep, talk to guardian and phone Dmitry. There is also a table where the phone will be placed. Scene 3.

This picture represents Dmitry's room where he is going to talk with Ilya. We haven't decided on where the actor is going to be ( bed or table ). Scene 4.

This picture represents the Kent College's dinning hall where Dmitry and Ilya is going to be eating, talking about the girl and looking how she is going to steal the phone. Scenes 5-6.

This is Kent College's main entrance where boys are going to follow the girl and would want to talk to her. Scene 7-9.

This is a Guilford's common room where those 3 criminals will be drinking, playing cards, smoking and talking about the future deals. Scenes 10 and 12.

The 6th form common room there the criminals will steal laptops, phones, money and other belongings. Scene 11.

There were some scenes where we had problems with lightings. Therefore,  we made sure that the lightings set up so the quality of the material will be high. There are some pictures representing those shots:

In our project we had some scenes where the camera angle is really important and will have a huge impact on audience. Therefore, camera position was really important for our film.

Daily shooting schedule - P1(g)

We have been shooting out film mainly in Kent College but in different parts of school like:

  •  Main building,
  • Main building
  • Fields
  • Guilford house.
Sometimes we had some problems with organising the places to shoot. Therefore we have done the contingency plan, which will allow us to plan where else to film, while the actors or the room which we need is busy. We were calling the "contingency plan" - plan B.

Contingency Plan.

We had some difficulties with managing our actors and place where to shoot. The first problem with organising some actors which had exams/tests, so we had to find other actors or shoot the scenes which doesn't involve this actor(s). The second difficulty was with managing the equipment with other groups , so if there wasn't any equipment which we needed, we had to change our filming date to a editing day.

Setting up appropriate equipment - P2 (a)

This list shows the equipment which we have been using through the filming production.

  • Camera - Canon 7D DSLR + Battery
  • 32GB Compact flashcard
  • Sony HVR-Z5E + Battery
  • Canon 50 mm f/1.8 mf/af (human eye effect)
  • Canon 18-55 mm  zoom f/3.5-5.6 mf/af (wide angle)
  • Canon 18-55 mm  zoom f/3.5-5.6 USM mf/af (wide angle)
  • Rode VideoMic-R Shotgun
  • Tripod - Velbon DV6000 + carry bag
  • PS-Hague Pro Steadymount
  • Dolly – Velbon DL-11
  • Canon camera bag
  • K9 - Hague CamCrane With Stand & Camera Tilt Control
  • Lilliput 668 GL-70NP/H/Y Monitor
  • KIT-N15-DRIVE - Ianiro Gulliver Lighting Kit

Here is the copies of our booking sheet of the equipment.

Unfortunately, this booking sheet does not represent all the equipment which we booked during our filming process.

Camera - Canon 7D DSLR + Battery

Those images shows the camera Canon 7D DSLR which we have been using nearly at all the time to film. This camera allowed us to take different shots with the use of different lenses.

32GB Compact flash card

This flash card was always in our Canon 7D DSLR camera where the all footage have been saved. After every time we done our filming, we would have to transfer the data to our laptops.

Sony HVR-Z5E + Battery

We have been using this camera to film the high angle shots with the use of crane. There are some examples of those shots :

This shot was taken while we were filming our 5th scene in dining hall. We were using crane to take good high shot which will show the establishment of dinning hall atmosphere.

Canon 50 mm f/1.8 mf/af.

This lens is giving you a normal human eye effect. Therefore, we were using this lens to film our 10th,11th and 12th scene. There are some pictures to show those shots:

Canon 18-55mm zoom f/3.5-5.6 mf/af

This lens gives wide angle which we haven't use a lot, unfortunately, but there were some shots where this lens was essential. For example our 8th scene ( Kent College's main entrance )

Canon 18-55 mm  zoom f/3.5-5.6 USM mf/af (wide angle)

This lens allows you to film using dolly and the footage will be high quality even if the camera was shaking. This lens decreases has better focus then the previous lens and the footage will not be as blurry as if you would use Canon 18-55 mm  zoom f/3.5-5.6 mf/af. Therefore, we have used this lens in the same shot ( 8th ), so that the quality of the footage would be high.

Rode VideoMic-R Shotgun

This is a Rode VideoMic-R Shotgun or a microphone which is usually goes on the top of camera. Really effective peace of material and is essential for this type of media, which my group was doing. This microphone helped us to record all the sound which is in the video. Unfortunately, we haven't made any pictures of it by ourself, but you can watch our video to make sure that it was used.

Tripod - Velbon DV6000 + carry bag

The tripod is essential part of equipment as well as camera, because tripod alloys us to steady and focus our camera so the footage will be high quality. Therefore we have made sure that we use it at all the time. There are some pictures of us using it:

PS-Hague Pro Steadymount

Steady mount is a really useful peace of equipment as well, but we did use it a lot, because nearly all our shots have been based in one place, except of the 8th shot where we have used the Canon 18-55 mm  zoom f/3.5-5.6 mf/af lenses.

Dolly – Velbon DL-11

Dolly - very useful equipment if you are filming how someone is walking. We have used this equipment again in the 8th shot when our actress was followed by 2 guys. This is a picture of this shot :

Canon camera bag

Camera bad is essential equipment, because it protects camera in case it falls. Therefore, we have used this bad at all the time.

K9 - Hague CamCrane With Stand & Camera Tilt Control and  Lilliput 668 GL-70NP/H/Y Monitor.

Those two peaces of equipment we have used to film high angle shot in our 5th scene in the dinning hall. There is a picture of this shot:

KIT-N15-DRIVE - Ianiro Gulliver Lighting Kit

Light kit is really important peace of equipment, which is useful in dark rooms, where you can make professional lightings. We have used this this kit while we were shooting 10th and 12th scenes. There are some pictures of them:
